Pallekele Stadium History & Cricket Records

Explore the genesis of Pallekele, its dedication to Muttiah Muralitharan, unforgettable ICC World Cup clashes, and record-breaking statistical milestones.

Origins & The 2011 World Cup

Constructed along with Hambantota’s stadium to replace the aging Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy, Pallekele was purpose-built to international standards for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.

In its official World Cup debut on 8 March 2011, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor blasted an unforgettable 131* off 124 balls against Pakistan on his 27th birthday, etching Pallekele into global cricket folklore. The ground also hosted crucial Super Eight clashes during Sri Lanka’s 2012 ICC World Twenty20.

The Muttiah Muralitharan Tribute

The Central Province Council passed a unanimous resolution to dedicate the venue as the Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium, honoring the Kandy-born legend who conquered 800 Test wickets — the highest in cricket history.

Surrounded by misty green tea hills and tropical canopies, the ground features an impeccably manicured outfield and clay-based wickets that offer swing with the new ball and sharp spin as the match progresses.
