Pallekele Stadium Parking Passes & Traffic Routes: Designated Vehicle Lots & Kundasale Road Advisory

Where can fans park their vehicles during matches at Pallekele Cricket Stadium? Match-day parking at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is split across four designated vehicle zones off the A26 (Kandy–Digana) highway: the main stadium forecourt (VIP & pass-holders only, approx. 180 slots), the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha ground (general cars, approx. 600 slots), the Pallekele Industrial Estate access road (vans and buses), and a signed tuk-tuk holding bay 400 m north of Gate 1. Car parking passes are issued by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and bundled with premium ticket tiers (LKR 5,000–15,000) or sold separately at LKR 500–1,000 for LPL and bilateral fixtures. The stadium sits 13 km east of Kandy Clock Tower via the A26; expect 35–75 minutes by car on match days. Gates open 2.5 hours before the first ball, and the Kundasale Road one-way advisory activates 90 minutes before start.

  • Four parking zones only: Stadium forecourt (pass-holders), Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha ground (general), Industrial Estate road (buses/vans), and the tuk-tuk bay near Gate 1.
  • Pass prices: LKR 500–1,000 standalone; bundled free with Grand Stand and A/C Box tickets (LKR 5,000+).
  • Distance: 13 km from Kandy Clock Tower via A26; 22 km from Kandy Railway Station by road; 2.5 km from Kundasale town.
  • Traffic advisory: Kundasale Road (A26) runs one-way eastbound from 90 minutes pre-match; return flow begins 20 minutes after the final ball.
  • No roadside parking: Police tow vehicles parked on the A26 shoulder between the 12 km and 14 km posts.

Why Pallekele’s Parking Geography Matters

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (officially Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium) sits in Kundasale, Central Province, on a 14-hectare plot bordered by the A26 highway to the north and the Mahaweli River to the south. Unlike Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, which is ringed by dense urban streets, Pallekele was built on former industrial land with a single primary access corridor. That design gives the venue clean sightlines and 35,000 capacity, but it funnels every car, van, bus and tuk-tuk through roughly 1.8 km of two-lane road.

On a full-house international — a Sri Lanka vs. India ODI, or an LPL final featuring Kandy Falcons (B-Love Kandy) — that corridor handles an estimated 4,500 to 6,000 vehicles in a 150-minute window. Understanding the parking pass system and the Kundasale Road advisory before you leave Kandy is the difference between arriving for the toss and arriving for the 20th over.

This spoke page covers vehicle lots, pass pricing, traffic flow, drop-off rules and the return journey. For gate-level logistics, pair it with our stadium gate entry map, and for the full match-day sequence read the Pallekele spectator guide.

Designated Vehicle Lots: The Four Official Zones

Sri Lanka Cricket, working with Kandy District Police and the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha, designates four parking zones for every ticketed fixture. No other area is sanctioned for spectator vehicles.

Zone A — Stadium Forecourt (Pass-Holders Only)

The paved forecourt immediately west of the main pavilion holds approximately 180 cars. Access is strictly by windscreen pass, checked at a boom barrier 300 m from the lot. Passes are bundled with Grand Stand (LKR 5,000–7,500) and A/C Box (LKR 10,000–15,000) tickets, or issued to SLC members, media, match officials and team buses. General ticket-holders cannot buy into Zone A on match day — it sells out at the pre-sale stage. Entry is via the western service road off the A26 at the 13 km post.

Zone B — Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha Ground (General Car Parking)

The largest public lot, roughly 600 car slots on compacted gravel, sits 900 m east of the stadium on the Kundasale town side. Shuttle tuk-tuks and a signed pedestrian walkway (12 minutes on foot) connect it to Gate 1 and Gate 2. Standalone passes cost LKR 500 for LPL fixtures and LKR 1,000 for internationals, payable at the lot entrance in cash or via SLC’s online portal. This is the default option for self-drive fans who do not hold premium tickets.

Zone C — Pallekele Industrial Estate Access Road (Vans & Buses)

Team coaches, tour-group vans and school buses use a 700 m stretch of the industrial estate road 1.4 km north-east of the ground. Capacity is roughly 120 large vehicles. Group bookings must be lodged with SLC logistics at least 72 hours before the match; unregistered buses are redirected to Digana, 6 km further east, which is impractical on match day.

Zone D — Tuk-Tuk Holding Bay (Gate 1 North)

A signed bay 400 m north of Gate 1 holds up to 250 three-wheelers in queue formation. Tuk-tuk drivers are not permitted to wait on the A26 shoulder or at the stadium roundabout. Fares from Kandy Clock Tower run LKR 1,800–2,500 for the 13 km trip; from Kundasale town, LKR 400–600.

Parking Pass Comparison & Pricing Table

How to Buy a Parking Pass

Passes are sold through three channels, and only these three are legitimate:

  • SLC online portal: Opens 10–14 days before each fixture. You select a zone, pay by card, and receive a QR pass by email. Print it or keep it on your phone — the Zone A barrier scans QR codes.
  • SLC ticket counters: The Kandy counter at the stadium’s eastern annexe and the Colombo counter at SLC headquarters, 35 Maitland Place. Counter sales close 48 hours before the match. See our guide on how to buy official Pallekele tickets for counter hours and ID requirements.
  • Bundled with premium tickets: Grand Stand and A/C Box purchases automatically include one Zone A pass per two seats. Confirm this at checkout — it is not applied retroactively.

Beware of touts selling “VIP parking” near the Kandy Clock Tower. There is no such product. Any pass not bearing an SLC hologram or QR code is invalid, and police turn away counterfeit passes at the Zone A barrier without exception.

Traffic Routes: Getting to Pallekele from Kandy

Every route to the stadium converges on the A26, the Kandy–Digana–Mahiyangana highway. There are three practical approaches.

Route 1 — Kandy City via A26 (Primary)

From Kandy Clock Tower, head east on the A26 through Tennekumbura and Kundasale. Distance is 13 km; normal driving time is 25–30 minutes. On match day, allow 55–75 minutes for a 2:30 p.m. start. The bottleneck is the Tennekumbura junction, 6 km from the stadium, where the road narrows to a single lane in each direction.

Route 2 — Katugastota–Digana Loop (Alternative)

From Kandy’s northern suburbs, take the Katugastota–Digana road (B365) and approach Pallekele from the east via Digana. This adds 9 km (total 22 km from Kandy) but bypasses Tennekumbura entirely. It is the recommended route for Zone B and Zone C users arriving after 1:00 p.m., and for anyone coming from the Kandy–Jaffna road.

Route 3 — Kandy Railway Station Arrivals

Fans arriving on the Podi Menike or Udarata Menike trains reach Kandy Railway Station, 22 km by road from the stadium. Pre-booked tuk-tuks from the station forecourt cost LKR 2,000–2,600. The cheaper option is a Kandy–Kundasale route bus (LKR 60–90, 40–50 minutes) that drops at the Kundasale junction, a 15-minute walk from Gate 2.

Transit Options & Fares Table

Mode Origin Fare (LKR) Journey Time Drop-off Point
Tuk-tuk Kandy Clock Tower 1,800–2,500 30–70 min Zone D tuk-tuk bay, Gate 1 north
Tuk-tuk Kundasale town 400–600 8–15 min Gate 2 pedestrian approach
Route bus Kandy Goods Shed terminal 60–90 40–60 min Kundasale junction (15 min walk)
Private car Kandy Clock Tower Fuel + LKR 500–1,000 parking 55–75 min (match day) Zone B Pradeshiya Sabha ground
Hotel shuttle Earl’s Regency, Tennekumbura Complimentary for guests 20–35 min Gate 1 VIP drop-off

Kundasale Road Advisory: The One-Way System

Kandy District Police activate a formal traffic plan for every fixture above 15,000 expected attendance. The advisory is published 72 hours in advance on SLC channels and enforced from 90 minutes before the scheduled start.

  • Eastbound one-way: The A26 between Tennekumbura junction (6 km post) and the stadium roundabout (13 km post) carries eastbound traffic only from T-90 minutes. Westbound movement is suspended.
  • Return flow: Westbound reopening begins 20 minutes after the final ball, once pedestrian egress from Gates 1–3 clears. Expect a 30–45 minute queue to reach Tennekumbura.
  • No-stopping zone: The A26 shoulder between the 12 km and 14 km posts is a tow-away zone. Vehicles left there are removed to the Kundasale police yard; recovery costs LKR 3,000 plus storage.
  • VIP and media corridor: The western service road to Zone A is closed to general traffic from T-120 minutes. Do not attempt it without a Zone A pass.
  • Pedestrian priority: Two marshalled crossings — at the stadium roundabout and at the Zone B walkway — halt vehicle flow for 5-minute intervals from T-60 minutes.

If you are unsure which gate your stand uses, the Pallekele seating layout and grass embankments page maps every stand to its nearest gate and parking zone.

Drop-Off, Pick-Up and Ride-Hailing Rules

Private-hire apps (PickMe, Uber) operate in Kandy but are subject to the same restrictions as tuk-tuks. The designated ride-hailing drop-off is the Zone D bay, 400 m north of Gate 1. Drivers who stop on the A26 main carriageway face an immediate police fine of LKR 2,500 and are directed away from the venue.

For pick-up after the match, agree a meeting point in advance. The most reliable is the Kundasale junction bus halt, a 15-minute walk from Gate 2, which sits outside the one-way cordon and clears faster than the stadium roundabout. Hotel shuttles — including the Earl’s Regency service from Tennekumbura — stage at the Gate 1 VIP drop-off and depart 30 minutes after the final ball.

Accessibility Parking

Wheelchair users and spectators with reduced mobility are allocated 24 marked bays in Zone A, closest to the Gate 1 accessible entrance ramp. These are free of charge but must be reserved through the SLC online portal at least 5 days before the match, with a copy of a disability ID or medical certificate uploaded. Companion vehicles may use the same bay. The accessible route from Zone A to the wheelchair seating deck is level and paved; from Zone B it involves a 12-minute walk and a kerb ramp at the pedestrian crossing.

Arrival Timing: A Practical Schedule

For a 2:30 p.m. start, the following timings reflect observed match-day conditions at recent internationals and LPL fixtures:

  • 11:30 a.m. (T-180): Leave Kandy if using Zone B. Roads are clear; you will park within 10 minutes.
  • 12:00 p.m. (T-150): Gates open. Zone A pass-holders should already be through the barrier.
  • 12:30 p.m. (T-120): Western service road closes. Zone B begins to fill.
  • 1:00 p.m. (T-90): One-way advisory activates. Tennekumbura queue builds to 25–35 minutes.
  • 1:45 p.m. (T-45): Zone B full. Late arrivals are redirected to overflow parking at the Kundasale school ground, 2.1 km east.
  • 2:15 p.m. (T-15): Anthems. A26 still congested; expect to miss the start if you leave Kandy after 1:00 p.m.

Common Parking Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming you can pay at Zone A. The forecourt is pre-sold only. No cash is accepted at the barrier.
  • Parking on the A26 shoulder. Tow-away enforcement is active from T-120 minutes; recovery costs LKR 3,000.
  • Buying passes from touts. Counterfeit passes are refused at the barrier with no refund.
  • Driving to Gate 1 for drop-off. The roundabout is pedestrian-priority from T-60; use Zone D instead.
